IMO profiles should be something you set up once, and never mess with again. We would need a thesis worth of research to determine more accurate models.Ĥ) Throw out or minimize the obsession with "profiles". Braukasiers has less issues, but is not perfect. A number of yeast experts, biologists, yeast labs, etc have all noted errors in the growth formula he uses. Beersmith uses the Zainasheff "formula" aka mr. The model he's using, IIRC the braukaiser model, is pretty inaccurate when compared to bru'n water.Ģ) Add an option for the Braukaiser yeast growth model. There's some bugs, some fudge factors, and the UX is the biggest complaint I see time and time again.ġ) Water chemistry needs to be updated/fixed. Is there a reason why 100% liquid decoction would be inferior?įrom what I can tell, beersmith has everything you need. I'm still fairly new to decoction and looking to learn more. Instead, I've just stuck to doing 100% liquid, heating that straight up to boiling and adding it right back in to bring the temp up to my step temperature and holding temp inside the mash tun rather than a kettle. If that's correct, boiling grain and re-introducing it back into the mash tun is lowing efficiency. It just never made sense to me to do the rest in a kettle and then boil it before re-adding to mash tun because I'd read that temps above 170F has a negative affect on mash efficiency even if you bring the temp back down. Thanks for the comment. This leaves me a bit confused though.ġ) I'm doing 5gal batches with a 10gal mash tun and I have my equipment profile set to use a higher water to grain ratio(.5qt/1lb).Ģ) Maybe the way I'm doing it is just plain wrong but I've been doing 100% liquid decoction for everything. I guess I just don't care that it's complicated.I put in the time to learn it and it's paid off Overall I give it a 3/10 for the user interface but 10/10 for features and 8/10 for accuracy (10/10 after equipment profile is set up properly.took me 3 brew days and tweaking it after each one) It's incrediblly useful to just add stepped mash temps and have it instantly spit out how much water to add or drain for decoction.same usefulness with with sparging as well.

It's a bit of a learning curve and you have to get your equipment profile dialed in but it's really worth it, imo.įor example, I've been getting a ton of use out of the calculations for mashing. If you have the software (free trial works) just go in and play around with it. If you want something for recipes then it's just a small step up from brew toad and similar alternatives.but there's so much more to it than that. I agree with you that it's not that user friendly.but holy hell is it robust.
